Steve and I are in San Diego attending the National Cartoonists Society’s annual Reuben Awards which kicked off today.
So far, so great.
Day one began with presentations by Illustrator, designer, storyboarder and creator of the online graphic novel, “Red’s Planet,” Eddie Pittman; Chris Houghton of Nickelodeon, Disney TV fame and Cartoon Network fame; Greg Evans, creator of the comic strip,”Luann;” and Suzy’s Zoo products creator, Suzy Spafford .
Congratulations to all the nominees up for this year’s National Cartoonists Society division awards!
Special shout out to fellow King Features creators, Isabella Bannerman – Six Chicks, and Terri Leibenson – Pajama Diaries, both up for the Best Newspaper Comic Strip award.
Steve and I will be in Sandy Eggo for the ceremonies on Memorial Day weekend to applaud the nominees and toast the winners.
The Reuben Awards isn’t just a lot of speeches accompanied by a rubber chicken dinner like your typical convention banquets, it was modeled on the Oscars show, and so, always begins with a spectacular stage show including a live band, lots of comedy, and sometimes song and dance.
Plus, the dinners are amazing — this year’s caramel-cheesecake dessert alone was so delicious, I wept openly after just three bites.
